Key message: Have the qualified installer verify the approved connector pairing before assembly; a physical fit does not establish compatibility.
Read aloud
Solar connectors from different product lines can look nearly identical. Two pieces may click together even though that pairing has not been evaluated. Appearance and a salesperson's general compatibility claim are not the installation instructions.
UL 6703 explains that photovoltaic connectors are identified and tested with compatible mating parts. Its scope describes same-brand parts unless manufacturers submit together for an evaluation proving intermatability. That means we need documentation for the actual pair, not a guess based on shape.
Keep connector identity and packaging available until the qualified installer checks the equipment instructions and approved components. Do not mix bins, substitute a similar part, or force a connection. If identification is missing, set the component aside for review. Assembly, crimping, electrical isolation, and testing belong to trained and authorized workers using the specified tools and procedures. Do not separate a live connector to inspect its markings. If a questionable pair has already been installed, report its location so the qualified person can plan safe evaluation and correction.
Scenario
A delivery contains two visually similar connector brands. A helper starts combining them to save time. The installer stops assembly and verifies the exact mating parts against the installation documentation.
Supervisor follow-up
Keep different connector families separately identified. Require qualified review of substitutions and retain supporting documentation with the installation record.
Session and source notes
Suggested session: 3–5 minutes including discussion. UL 6703 — Connectors for Use in Photovoltaic Systems, scope 1.5 — https://www.shopulstandards.com/ProductDetail.aspx?productId=UL6703. This is standards-development guidance on evaluated pairings; applicable installation requirements and manufacturer instructions must also be checked.
Show the crew
Compare labels and part numbers on unused, disconnected samples with the approved parts list. Do not connect them to modules or demonstrate live disconnection.
Ask the crew
Does clicking together prove compatibility? No. The actual pairing needs the appropriate documentation and evaluation.
What should happen to an unidentified connector? Set it aside and have the qualified installer resolve identity and suitability before use.
