A Plating Shift Handoff Must Carry the Unfinished Risks
Plating & Metal Finishing · 5 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Practice a handoff for one unresolved line condition, including the restriction, owner, and required next decision.
Understand the hazard
Focus: Shift communication.
A shift can inherit a changed bath, isolated pump, failed indicator, temporary container, or unresolved chemical question. If those conditions exist only in the outgoing worker's memory, the next operator may restart under a false assumption. A useful handoff describes the actual condition of the line and the work that is not yet authorized to continue.
Use the controls
Use the approved handoff record and speak directly about abnormal conditions. Identify the equipment, chemical or batch, current restriction, temporary control, responsible person, and next decision. Keep readings and times accurate. Do not describe a problem as fixed when it has only been reported. Outstanding locks and tags remain under the applicable energy procedure, not an informal verbal transfer.
Stop, report, and verify
The incoming worker should repeat back critical restrictions and check the record against the visible equipment status from a safe location. Stop if the two disagree. Supervisors must resolve uncertain responsibility before work resumes. Include waste and environmental concerns alongside production quality. A complete handoff allows the next crew to make a safe decision without repeating an earlier exposure or mistake.
Discuss with the team
The outgoing worker says the filter is ready, but a restriction remains in the maintenance log.
Question: Which action should the incoming shift take?
Answer guidance: Stop and resolve the conflicting status with the responsible lead before restarting.
Question: What should an unresolved handoff include?
Answer guidance: The condition, restriction, temporary control, responsible person, and required next decision.
Prepare, practice, and follow up
Leader preparation: Bring the current instruction for shift communication, the relevant site checklist, and clean demonstration materials. Confirm the assigned lead and local stop-work response before presenting.
Activity: Practice a handoff for one unresolved line condition, including the restriction, owner, and required next decision.
Follow-up: Observe the next applicable task and verify this practice: practice a handoff for one unresolved line condition, including the restriction, owner, and required next decision. Record any gap, responsible person, and completion check before repeating the task.
