A Second Pallet Changes the Loading Decision

Masonry & Stonework · 5 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Confirm the approved load and staging location before adding masonry materials to a concrete floor.

Read aloud

One pallet may already be sitting on the floor when another delivery arrives. That does not prove the floor can support a second pallet beside it. Materials, equipment, workers, and other trades all contribute to the load.

OSHA requires the employer to determine that a concrete structure can support construction loads, using information from someone qualified in structural design. The delivery driver and installation crew should not make that determination by looking for cracks.

Before unloading, confirm the approved staging location, quantity, and arrangement with the supervisor. If the delivery differs from the plan, pause and obtain a revised decision. Do not move the pallet a few feet and assume the concern is solved.

Keep the approved area identified so other trades do not add materials without coordination. Report unexpected cracking, movement, or other concerning changes immediately and withdraw from the affected area. Structural assessment belongs to qualified personnel.

Scenario

A delivery arrives with two pallets of block, but the staging plan identifies space for only one.

Supervisor follow-up

Reconcile delivery quantities with the loading plan before unloading and coordinate staging with other trades.

Session notes

Suggested session: 3–5 minutes including discussion and practical check. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.701(a) — Construction loads on concrete structures

Show the crew

Compare a fictional delivery ticket with an approved staging drawing. Do not move actual loads.

Ask the crew

  1. Does an existing pallet prove another is safe? No; the combined load and its location need approval.
  2. Who supplies the structural information? A person qualified in structural design, through the employer’s planning process.
