Air-Control Equipment Readings Need a Response

Plating & Metal Finishing · 5 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Read a mock air-control log and identify the required action for an unacceptable parameter.

Understand the hazard

Focus: Scrubbers and mist eliminators.

An exhaust system may include a scrubber, mist eliminator, or other air-control equipment. A running fan does not prove the complete control system is operating properly. The required checks depend on the equipment and applicable air requirements. Operators need the approved parameter, acceptable condition, and response instruction for the actual system serving their line.

Use the controls

Read and record the assigned indicators at the required point and frequency. Report unexpected differential pressure, circulation failure, leakage, or other listed condition. Keep access clear for inspection and maintenance. Do not change a setpoint, remove media, or bypass a control to improve production. Some control equipment contains hazardous residues, so internal work requires separate exposure and energy controls.

Stop, report, and verify

When a parameter fails, follow the process restriction and notification instruction instead of continuing until smoke or mist becomes visible. Give the lead the actual reading and operating condition. Record the correction and restart authorization accurately. Product quality does not demonstrate air compliance, and a worker should not be asked to invent the applicable permit or rule interpretation at the equipment.

Discuss with the team

A mist eliminator indicator is outside its approved range, but the finished parts look normal.

Question: Does normal product quality justify continuing?
Answer guidance: No. Follow the control-equipment response and process restriction instruction.

Question: Does a running fan establish scrubber performance?
Answer guidance: No. Check the complete system using its assigned operating parameters.

Prepare, practice, and follow up

Leader preparation: Bring the current instruction for scrubbers and mist eliminators, the relevant site checklist, and clean demonstration materials. Confirm the assigned lead and local stop-work response before presenting.

Activity: Read a mock air-control log and identify the required action for an unacceptable parameter.

Follow-up: Observe the next applicable task and verify this practice: read a mock air-control log and identify the required action for an unacceptable parameter. Record any gap, responsible person, and completion check before repeating the task.

Awareness briefing: apply site-specific procedures and current applicable requirements. This talk does not replace required training, qualification, exposure assessment, or a written safety program.

Suggested session: 4-6 minutes, including discussion and activity. Prepared October 18, 2026; verify current requirements before use.

Show the crew
