Audit Respiratory Protection as a Complete Program

Safety Workers · 7 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Check the connected decisions behind required respirator use.

Know the hazard

Team: Safety Workers. Topic: Industrial Hygiene.

Seeing respirators on faces does not establish that respiratory protection is suitable. Safety staff should trace the decision from the hazard assessment to the selected protection and the conditions of use. Identify the contaminant, exposure conditions, task, and applicable program requirements. Respirator selection requires competent evaluation; a disposable mask, cartridge respirator, and supplied-air system are not interchangeable solutions. Determine whether the use is required or voluntary and apply the corresponding requirements.

Use the controls

Review the connected program elements with the responsible administrator. These can include medical evaluation, fit testing for tight-fitting respirators, training, maintenance, storage, and appropriate change schedules or service-life controls. Protect medical information and verify status through authorized records rather than collecting diagnoses. Ask workers to explain inspection, donning, limitations, and what they do if breathing becomes difficult or the equipment fails. A fit-test record for a different facepiece configuration does not automatically establish suitability for the one in use.

Work within the safe plan

Observe the task from a safe location and check whether field conditions match the program's assumptions. Consider facial hair that interferes with the seal, damaged parts, incorrect cartridges, and changes in material or ventilation. Route deficiencies to the administrator and maintain appropriate exposure protection while they are resolved. Do not remove engineering controls simply because respirators are available. A good audit verifies an integrated protective system and a clear response to change, rather than just confirming that a box of masks has been purchased.

Discuss with the crew

A crew uses the same cartridge for several chemicals because it fits the facepiece.

Question: What must be verified?
Answer guidance: Suitability for the actual contaminants and conditions plus the full program requirements.

Question: Who should resolve selection?
Answer guidance: The competent program administrator with appropriate technical support.

Prepare, act, and follow up

Leader preparation: Bring the written program and a de-identified task list.

Put it into practice: Trace one required-respirator task from assessment through field use and identify a missing link.

Supervisor follow-up: Resolve the gap before relying on that respirator arrangement.
