Automatic Lines Can Move Without a Nearby Operator

Key message: Identify one guarded danger zone and explain the approved jam-clearing escalation process.
Understand the hazard
Focus: Machine guarding.
Automatic hoists, conveyors, and transfer arms can start from a programmed sequence or a remote command. Standing beside a quiet line does not mean movement cannot occur. Pinch points can trap hands, clothing, or a person between equipment and a tank. Guards and interlocks protect the operating area only when they remain in their approved condition.
Use the controls
Stay outside guarded travel zones and use the designated access points. Do not reach through a guard to straighten a part or retrieve a dropped item. Report missing barriers, damaged interlocks, and unexpected movement. A production adjustment that requires entering a danger zone needs an approved method and the applicable energy controls; an emergency stop alone is not a service isolation.
Stop, report, and verify
If a part jams, stop through the normal safe procedure and call the assigned person. Never hold an interlock switch closed or ask a coworker to watch the controls while you reach inside. Before restart, verify that people, tools, and temporary access arrangements are clear. The person who clears the jam must follow the authorized task rather than inventing a convenient shortcut.
Discuss with the team
A rack stops just inside the guarded zone, and an operator can almost reach it through the opening.
Question: What makes reaching in unsafe?
Answer guidance: The line may move and expose the worker to a pinch or crush point without proper isolation.
Question: Can a coworker watching the controls replace isolation?
Answer guidance: No. Jam clearing must use the approved task and applicable energy controls.
Prepare, practice, and follow up
Leader preparation: Bring the current instruction for machine guarding, the relevant site checklist, and clean demonstration materials. Confirm the assigned lead and local stop-work response before presenting.
Activity: Identify one guarded danger zone and explain the approved jam-clearing escalation process.
Follow-up: Observe the next applicable task and verify this practice: identify one guarded danger zone and explain the approved jam-clearing escalation process. Record any gap, responsible person, and completion check before repeating the task.
