Concrete buckets concentrate a heavy load above people who are focused on directing placement. The safest discussion starts before the bucket rises: where it will travel, where workers will stand, and who communicates with the crane operator. Do not use the shortest travel path if it unnecessarily carries the bucket over people. No worker rides the bucket to reach the placement area.
Use the controls
Use the approved bucket, rigging, and lifting arrangement with the assigned qualified or trained personnel. Inspect equipment through the required process, including the gate and its protective features. Keep workers out from under the bucket while it is raised or lowered. Approach only through the controlled placement method, remaining clear of crushing points between the bucket and forms or structure. Do not reach into a moving bucket to clear hung-up material.
Work within the safe plan
If the gate behaves unexpectedly, material hangs up, or communication is lost, stop and have the load managed safely under the lift plan. Do not strike or repair a suspended bucket while others wait beneath it. Coordinate the receiving area so hose crews, finishers, and other trades cannot wander into the lifting zone. At the end of a lift, control the empty bucket as carefully as the full one; swing and pinch hazards do not disappear because the concrete has been discharged.
Discuss with the crew
A worker walks under the bucket to get to the gate lever faster.
Question: What is wrong with that approach?
Answer guidance: Workers must remain clear of the suspended bucket and use the controlled receiving method.
Question: Can the empty bucket be treated as harmless?
Answer guidance: No. It still presents suspended-load, swing, and pinch hazards.
Prepare, act, and follow up
Leader preparation: Bring the lift plan and bucket inspection instructions.
Put it into practice: Identify the planned travel path, receiving position, and stop signal using the lift drawing.
Supervisor follow-up: Verify bucket gate condition and maintain the pedestrian exclusion route.
