Concrete Buggies: Check the Route Before Loading

Concrete Workers · 7 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Prevent tipping, collisions, and edge exposure during material movement.

Know the hazard

Team: Concrete Workers. Topic: Material Handling.

A loaded concrete buggy changes the way a narrow ramp, uneven joint, or tight turn behaves. The operator needs a suitable route before loading begins. Do not assume that a path used by workers on foot is suitable for moving heavy material. The route plan must account for capacity, ground and deck support, slopes, edges, visibility, and the other people sharing the space.

Use the controls

Only trained personnel operate powered equipment, following manufacturer limits and site arrangements. Inspect controls, tires or wheels, braking features, and any required guards. Keep the planned load and travel method within the equipment instructions. Do not add riders, balance extra tools on the load, or use a coworker as a human barrier at an unprotected edge. If the route crosses a structure, the responsible personnel must establish that the intended loading is supported.

Work within the safe plan

Travel with a clear view and the prescribed control method, stopping whenever pedestrians enter the route or conditions differ from the plan. Do not try to save a tipping load by placing the body in its path. Manage spills promptly through the approved process so repeated trips do not become progressively more slippery. At breaks and closeout, secure the buggy as directed. The fastest delivery is not useful if it depends on a route whose support or protection no one has actually verified.

Discuss with the crew

A loaded buggy is sent across a newly placed slab because it shortens the route.

Question: What must be established first?
Answer guidance: Authorized confirmation that the structure can support the intended loading and that the route is safe.

Question: Should an operator try to catch a tipping buggy?
Answer guidance: No. Keep out of its movement path and follow equipment emergency instructions.

Prepare, act, and follow up

Leader preparation: Bring the buggy instructions and material-route sketch.

Put it into practice: Walk the unloaded route and identify turns, edges, shared access, and support questions.

Supervisor follow-up: Close route and equipment defects before material delivery begins.
