Key message: Move and secure welding cylinders using the intended equipment.
Know the hazard
Team: Welders. Topic: Welding Safety.
A compressed-gas cylinder contains stored energy even when it looks like an ordinary shop object. Valve damage, heat exposure, or a fall can turn a routine move into a serious incident. Our handling plan must protect the valve and prevent the cylinder from tipping, rolling, or being struck. A cylinder's color is not a reliable substitute for its product identification.
Use the controls
Use the proper cart and secure the cylinder as directed. Follow the supplier and site procedure for valve protection and regulator removal during transport. Do not lift a cylinder by its cap, drag it by a hose, or use it as a roller. Keep the travel route clear and coordinate crossings with forklift traffic. If the cylinder label is missing or unreadable, set it aside through the supplier process rather than trying a connection to identify the gas.
Work within the safe plan
At the workstation and storage location, use the required restraint and keep cylinders away from damaging heat and traffic. Follow the applicable separation and storage requirements for oxygen and fuel gases rather than copying the arrangement from another shop. Report damaged valves, restraint failures, or a cylinder that has fallen. Do not attempt unauthorized repairs. Taking an extra minute to plan the move protects everyone along the route, not just the person pushing the cart.
Discuss with the crew
A worker pulls a cylinder toward the welding bay by its connected hose.
Question: What can go wrong?
Answer guidance: The hose or valve can be damaged and the cylinder can tip.
Question: How should an unreadable cylinder be handled?
Answer guidance: Hold it and contact the supplier through the site procedure; do not guess the contents.
Prepare, act, and follow up
Leader preparation: Bring a cylinder cart and demonstrate with an approved secured setup.
Put it into practice: Demonstrate the approved cart, restraint, and route using a secured cylinder. Have a second person check the planned route for corners, door thresholds, and nearby moving vehicles.
Supervisor follow-up: Supervisor checks cylinder restraints and identifies damaged or unmarked containers.
