Driving for Work: Protect the Trip, Not Just the Destination

General Small Business · 7 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Plan work travel without distraction, fatigue, or unsecured cargo.

Know the hazard

Team: General Small Business. Topic: Vehicles and Field Work.

A work trip is a work task. The schedule, route, vehicle condition, and load all affect safety before the driver enters traffic. A late appointment does not justify speeding or using a phone while moving.

Use the controls

Before departure, check the vehicle through the established process and report defects affecting safe use. Adjust mirrors and controls, set navigation, and secure tools and materials so a sudden stop does not turn them into projectiles. Use seat belts and follow traffic laws. Chemical cargo requires a separate review of packaging, compatibility, securement, and applicable transportation requirements.

Work within the safe plan

Keep attention on driving. If a call, message, navigation change, or work issue needs attention, park safely before handling it. Report fatigue or conditions that make the trip unsafe and contact the supervisor to change the schedule or travel arrangement. Allow time for traffic and weather, and avoid backing when a safer parking arrangement is available. Management should support a safe arrival by setting realistic appointments. Today, we will identify one planning change that removes pressure from the person behind the wheel.

Discuss with the crew

A supervisor repeatedly texts a driver for arrival updates while the employee travels between client sites.

Question: What should the driver do?
Answer guidance: Respond only after safely parking; the company should provide a communication process that does not require interaction while driving.

Question: What should the supervisor change?
Answer guidance: Use realistic arrival windows and agreed check-ins, and avoid expecting immediate replies from moving vehicles.

Prepare, act, and follow up

Leader preparation: Review the company's driving and vehicle defect reporting policies.

Put it into practice: Agree on a safe travel check-in method and inspect the securement of one common item carried in work vehicles.

Supervisor follow-up: Review travel schedules and correct any pattern of appointments that encourages unsafe driving.
