Grinding After Welding Is Its Own Hazard Assessment

Key message: Control wheel, particle, and spark hazards during weld finishing.
Know the hazard
Team: Welders. Topic: Welding Safety.
Finishing a weld changes the tools and the hazard pattern. A grinding wheel can fail, the tool can kick, and the spark stream may reach farther than expected. The welding permit or helmet does not automatically cover every finishing operation. Before swapping tools, confirm that the grinder, accessory, guarding, and protective equipment match the actual task.
Use the controls
Inspect the isolated tool and accessory according to the manufacturer's instructions. Confirm compatibility, including the accessory's intended use and speed rating, and keep the required guard and handles in place. Do not use a cutting wheel for a side-grinding task it was not designed to perform. Secure the workpiece so the operator is not balancing it with one hand. Arrange the body and bystanders outside the likely debris and kickback path while keeping stable footing.
Work within the safe plan
Plan spark control again, particularly if the part has been moved away from the protected welding station. Manage dust and noise under the site's assessment, and use the required eye and face protection. Stop if vibration, damage, binding, or abnormal operation appears. Isolate before adjustment or accessory changes as required by the procedure. Today's demonstration uses an unpowered tool to check setup and workholding; it does not authorize use by an untrained operator or defeat any manufacturer safeguard.
Discuss with the crew
A worker removes the guard to reach a tight weld and uses the side of a cutoff wheel.
Question: What should change?
Answer guidance: Stop and select a compatible tool and accessory arrangement with required safeguards.
Question: Does the original welding location control the grinding sparks?
Answer guidance: Only if the actual finishing location and spark paths remain covered by the assessment.
Prepare, act, and follow up
Leader preparation: Bring the grinder manual and a cold setup.
Put it into practice: On an isolated tool, check guard, accessory markings, workholding, and spark direction. Have the crew explain why the chosen accessory is suitable for this specific finishing operation.
Supervisor follow-up: Replace incompatible accessories and review tight-access finishing methods.
