Hazardous Waste: Identify the Waste Before Choosing the Bin

General Small Business · 7 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Prevent disposal decisions based on appearance, quantity, or product branding.

Know the hazard

Team: General Small Business. Topic: Environmental Protection.

A product becoming waste creates a new decision. Spent solvent, unused chemicals, contaminated absorbents, and process residues may require different management from ordinary trash. A small amount is not automatically unregulated, and a product's marketing description does not establish the waste classification.

Use the controls

The business must make an appropriate waste determination using process knowledge and other suitable information or testing as required. Employees should place waste only in the designated stream and report unfamiliar materials. Do not mix wastes to save space or dilute a material to make it appear less hazardous. Mixing can cause reactions and complicate classification and disposal.

Work within the safe plan

Keep waste identified and managed through the site's approved procedures while the determination is resolved. A safety data sheet can help, but it may not fully describe waste changed by use or contamination. State rules can differ from federal rules, so the responsible person must verify the applicable requirements. Today, we will trace one waste from the task that creates it to its approved container and destination. If any part of that route is uncertain, we will resolve it before discarding the material.

Discuss with the crew

A shop uses an absorbent to collect a solvent spill and plans to put the dry-looking material into the office trash.

Question: Does looking dry establish ordinary trash status?
Answer guidance: No. The waste's characteristics and applicable listings and rules must be evaluated.

Question: What should the employee do?
Answer guidance: Use the designated identified waste arrangement and notify the responsible person for a proper determination.

Prepare, act, and follow up

Leader preparation: Identify one actual waste stream and the person responsible for its waste determination.

Put it into practice: Choose one waste stream and confirm who approved its classification and disposal route.

Supervisor follow-up: Document unresolved streams and obtain the necessary determination before disposal.
