Inspect Racks and Fixtures Before Loading

Plating & Metal Finishing · 5 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Perform a dry rack inspection and identify the tag-out route for damaged fixtures.

Understand the hazard

Focus: Rack integrity.

Racks and fixtures carry parts through chemical exposure, repeated handling, and mechanical wear. Corrosion, bent members, loose attachments, or an improvised repair can change how the load behaves. A rack that held yesterday's small parts may not safely hold today's larger job. The approved loading arrangement is part of the handling plan.

Use the controls

Inspect the rack and attachment points under the site's checklist before loading. Verify the correct fixture and load arrangement for the job. Remove damaged equipment from service through the designated process, and make its status clear so another shift does not use it. Do not straighten, weld, or reinforce a rack without authorized review of the repair.

Stop, report, and verify

During loading, keep hands out of pinch zones and support parts using the approved method. If a part cannot be secured as intended, stop and ask for the correct fixture. Do not rely on wire, tape, or another improvised restraint to complete the order. The lead should verify the replacement arrangement and communicate any approved change to all affected operators.

Discuss with the team

A rack hook is visibly thinned by corrosion, but the batch is nearly ready.

Question: Can the rack be used for one final trip?
Answer guidance: No. Remove the suspect equipment from service and obtain an approved replacement or disposition.

Question: Who approves a rack repair?
Answer guidance: The designated responsible person through the authorized repair and verification process.

Prepare, practice, and follow up

Leader preparation: Bring the current instruction for rack integrity, the relevant site checklist, and clean demonstration materials. Confirm the assigned lead and local stop-work response before presenting.

Activity: Perform a dry rack inspection and identify the tag-out route for damaged fixtures.

Follow-up: Observe the next applicable task and verify this practice: perform a dry rack inspection and identify the tag-out route for damaged fixtures. Record any gap, responsible person, and completion check before repeating the task.
