Keep Plating Contamination Out of Break Areas

Plating & Metal Finishing · 5 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Trace the route from the line to the break area and identify the required removal and handwashing points.

Understand the hazard

Focus: Hygiene and take-home exposure.

A contaminated glove can carry metal-bearing residue from a tank to a lunch table in seconds. Dust or dried solution on clothing can also travel into vehicles and homes. The fact that a surface looks dry does not make it clean. Treat the boundary between production and clean areas as part of the exposure control system.

Use the controls

Use the designated changing, washing, and storage arrangements. Remove contaminated protection before entering clean eating areas and wash as instructed before eating, drinking, or handling personal items. Keep street clothes and work contamination separated. Follow the approved handling and laundering arrangements; do not take contaminated work items home for ordinary family washing.

Stop, report, and verify

Report contamination outside its controlled area so cleaning can be arranged safely. Do not brush clothing with compressed air or shake residue into the room. If a phone or badge is needed in production, use the approved method to avoid spreading contamination. Supervisors should check the route people actually take to breaks, including shared door handles and time clocks.

Discuss with the team

A worker wearing tank gloves opens the refrigerator in the break room.

Question: What needs correction beyond changing the gloves?
Answer guidance: The touched surface needs controlled cleaning and the clean-area boundary must be reinforced.

Question: Can contaminated work clothing be taken home for ordinary washing?
Answer guidance: Follow the approved contamination and laundering program instead.

Prepare, practice, and follow up

Leader preparation: Bring the current instruction for hygiene and take-home exposure, the relevant site checklist, and clean demonstration materials. Confirm the assigned lead and local stop-work response before presenting.

Activity: Trace the route from the line to the break area and identify the required removal and handwashing points.

Follow-up: Observe the next applicable task and verify this practice: trace the route from the line to the break area and identify the required removal and handwashing points. Record any gap, responsible person, and completion check before repeating the task.
