Key message: Choose stable access that allows detailed painting without leaning or shifting the ladder while occupied.
Know the hazard
Team: Painters. Topic: Falls Prevention.
Cutting in encourages painters to chase a line a little farther than the ladder allows. A clean edge is not worth a fall. The safest setup provides a comfortable work position with adequate reach and clear footing. If you must lean around a corner, stretch above the permitted standing level, or balance a tray awkwardly, stop and change the access arrangement.
Use the controls
Select the correct ladder type, condition, height, and duty rating for the worker and materials. Set it on a stable surface and follow its labels and manufacturer instructions. Keep paint off steps and feet, secure the work area against doors and traffic, and carry materials using a method that allows safe climbing. Do not bridge gaps, add boxes underneath, or move a ladder while someone is on it.
Work within the safe plan
Move the ladder before reach becomes uncomfortable, and use another access system when prolonged or two-handed work makes a ladder unsuitable. Consider nearby electrical hazards, especially when moving poles or access equipment. Today, identify every doorway that could strike this ladder and who will maintain the boundary. A good ladder position must remain safe when another worker, customer, or delivery enters the room.
Discuss with the crew
A painter props a folded stepladder against a wall to reach the final corner while the hallway remains open.
Question: Why is this setup unacceptable?
Answer guidance: The ladder is not used as designed and passing traffic can disturb it.
Question: What should replace the shortcut?
Answer guidance: A properly selected, opened, stable ladder or other suitable access with traffic controlled.
Prepare, act, and follow up
Leader preparation: Inspect the ladder intended for use and review the work surface and pedestrian route.
Put it into practice: Place an inspected ladder in a safe demonstration position and identify where repositioning will be necessary.
Supervisor follow-up: Verify access selection and doorway controls during the first cutting-in operation of the shift.
