Leading-Edge Work: Plan Protection Before the Deck Advances

Builders · 7 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Coordinate advancing work with a task-specific fall-protection system.

Know the hazard

Team: Builders. Topic: Fall Prevention.

Decking moves the work boundary every time another sheet is placed. A location protected at the start of the shift can become an exposed leading edge minutes later. Carrying materials also changes balance and visibility. The fall-protection method must match the actual work and remain effective as the crew advances.

Use the controls

The employer must select compliant protection and provide the required training, equipment, and rescue arrangements. Workers should understand connection points, travel limitations, material staging, and who may enter the exposed work zone. Do not assume a warning line, a monitoring arrangement, or a written plan is permitted for every task. Alternative methods have specific regulatory conditions and require appropriate planning; this talk does not authorize their use.

Work within the safe plan

Stop when the installed protection no longer matches the work sequence, an anchor is questionable, or material handling forces a worker beyond the planned boundary. Never select a convenient pipe or temporary brace as an anchor without approval. Review rescue access before work starts so a fall does not become an improvised recovery. Today trace the next three decking moves from a protected area and identify exactly when protection must move, who installs it, and how other trades remain outside the exposure.

Discuss with the crew

The crew reaches the end of a protected deck section before the next barrier is installed.

Question: What is the next step?
Answer guidance: Pause at the protected boundary until the approved system is ready.

Question: Can any nearby steel serve as an anchor?
Answer guidance: No; anchorage must be selected and verified under the applicable protection design.

Prepare, act, and follow up

Leader preparation: Bring the site fall-protection plan and current deck sequence.

Put it into practice: Review the next sequence using the plan from a safe position.

Supervisor follow-up: Verify protection changes before releasing each deck section.
