Lift-Station Pumps Can Start Without a Local Operator

Water, Sewer & Treatment · 7 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Recognize remote and automatic startup during maintenance.

Know the hazard

Team: Water, Sewer & Treatment. Topic: Hazardous Energy.

A silent lift-station pump is not necessarily safe to touch. Level controls, remote commands, backup power, or a second pump can change conditions without a person standing beside the motor. Removing rags, adjusting a coupling, or reaching into a pump opening can expose someone to startup or stored energy. The crew must recognize the difference between stopping equipment for operation and securing it for servicing.

Use the controls

Authorized employees apply the equipment-specific energy-control procedure. They identify electrical supplies, automatic controls, hydraulic or pressure sources, and any material movement that could affect the job. The procedure includes controlling stored energy and verifying the isolation before exposure begins. A selector in the off position, a screen message, or an emergency-stop button is not a substitute for the required physical isolation. Workers who are not authorized must not perform that servicing.

Work within the safe plan

Coordinate with the control room so no one mistakes an isolated pump for a failure needing an immediate restart. Account for contractors, shift changes, and everyone protected by the isolation. If the job expands to a connected line or another pump, stop and reassess the energy boundaries. After service, use the formal restoration process rather than letting the first person finished remove someone else's protection. Reliable wastewater service depends on maintenance that does not put the mechanic inside a live process.

Discuss with the crew

A worker presses stop on the touchscreen and begins pulling debris from the inlet.

Question: Why is the touchscreen insufficient?
Answer guidance: It is an operating control, and automatic or remote actions may still energize equipment.

Question: Who verifies that servicing isolation is effective?
Answer guidance: The authorized personnel using the applicable energy-control procedure before work begins.

Prepare, act, and follow up

Leader preparation: Bring the pump-specific energy-control procedure.

Put it into practice: Using the drawing, identify automatic controls and backup sources without touching equipment.

Supervisor follow-up: Compare the posted procedure with actual pump identification and remote-control functions.
