Lock Out the Whole Plating System Before Service

Plating & Metal Finishing · 5 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Using the posted energy diagram, identify the sources for a pump-and-filter service task without operating equipment.

Understand the hazard

Focus: Hazardous energy.

A plating line can contain electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, thermal, and chemical energy. Stopping the conveyor does not necessarily stop a transfer pump, heater, automatic hoist, or remote command. Servicing begins with the equipment-specific energy procedure. A shortcut based on the last repair can leave a different energy source active today.

Use the controls

Only authorized employees apply the assigned lockout procedure. Identify the equipment boundary, notify affected workers, isolate the sources, control stored energy, and verify isolation by the approved method before work starts. Include connected lines and automatic restart possibilities. An operator stop, emergency stop, selector switch, or computer screen is not a substitute for an energy-isolating device.

Stop, report, and verify

Affected workers must respect locks and tags and never attempt restart. Group work, shift changes, and contractors need the site's coordinated arrangements. If the job changes, pause and review the boundary before reaching farther into the equipment. Return to service requires the prescribed checks, personnel clearance, and notifications; production pressure does not authorize removing another person's lock.

Discuss with the team

A pump is isolated electrically, but a connected line can still feed liquid into the service point.

Question: What hazard remains?
Answer guidance: Chemical flow or pressure from connected equipment must be controlled within the isolation procedure.

Question: Can an emergency stop substitute for service isolation?
Answer guidance: No. The equipment-specific hazardous-energy procedure controls servicing.

Prepare, practice, and follow up

Leader preparation: Bring the current instruction for hazardous energy, the relevant site checklist, and clean demonstration materials. Confirm the assigned lead and local stop-work response before presenting.

Activity: Using the posted energy diagram, identify the sources for a pump-and-filter service task without operating equipment.

Follow-up: Observe the next applicable task and verify this practice: using the posted energy diagram, identify the sources for a pump-and-filter service task without operating equipment. Record any gap, responsible person, and completion check before repeating the task.

Awareness briefing: apply site-specific procedures and current applicable requirements. This talk does not replace required training, qualification, exposure assessment, or a written safety program.

Suggested session: 4-6 minutes, including discussion and activity. Prepared October 18, 2026; verify current requirements before use.
