Material Handling: Redesign the Lift

General Small Business · 7 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Reduce awkward and forceful handling before relying on lifting technique.

Know the hazard

Team: General Small Business. Topic: Everyday Workplace Safety.

A load does not need to be unusually heavy to cause an injury. Reaching into a deep bin, twisting through a doorway, lifting repeatedly, or carrying something with a poor grip can increase strain. There is no single weight limit that makes every lift safe for every worker and task.

Use the controls

First ask whether we can avoid the lift, split the delivery, change storage height, or use suitable handling equipment. Check the load's stability and the route before moving it. Use help when the item is bulky or difficult to control, and agree on the movement before a team lift. Mechanical assistance must be appropriate for the load and used by someone trained to operate it.

Work within the safe plan

Keep the item close when practical, use a stable stance, and turn with your feet rather than twisting under load. Avoid jerking or trying to catch a falling object. Report discomfort early so the job can be assessed before the problem worsens. The business should change an unreasonable task instead of repeatedly asking workers to develop a better lifting style. Today, we will examine how the work is arranged, not test anyone's strength.

Discuss with the crew

A box is manageable at waist height but must be pulled from the back of a low shelf several times an hour.

Question: What adds risk beyond the box's weight?
Answer guidance: Reaching, low posture, frequency, and poor access.

Question: What is a useful correction?
Answer guidance: Move frequently handled stock to a more accessible height and position, or change the handling method.

Prepare, act, and follow up

Leader preparation: Bring an empty representative carton and identify available carts or handling aids.

Put it into practice: Select one frequently moved item and propose a layout or equipment change that removes an awkward lift.

Supervisor follow-up: Ask workers whether the change reduced effort and check that it did not create congestion.
