Move the Flushing Plan When the Mixing Station Moves

Masonry & Stonework · 5 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Recheck emergency flushing access every time corrosive-material work moves to another location.

Read aloud

Yesterday's setup does not automatically protect today's mixing station. A masonry crew may move around a wall while the flushing equipment stays behind a locked gate or a new pallet stack. Equipment that exists somewhere on the project may no longer be ready for the people doing the work.

Before work with a material that can injure eyes or skin through corrosive exposure, check its safety data sheet and the site's emergency plan. OSHA's construction rule requires suitable quick-drenching or flushing facilities within the work area for immediate emergency use where this exposure may occur. Do not assume a drinking-water bottle or a distant restroom meets that need.

After moving the work, identify the flushing location, clear the route, and confirm the equipment is ready under the site's inspection procedure. If protection is missing, stop that chemical task until it is corrected. If a splash occurs, begin emergency flushing promptly and get help according to the product instructions and emergency plan. Do not delay flushing to finish the batch or find the foreman.

Scenario

The mortar station moves to the opposite side of a building. The designated flushing unit remains inside a fenced area that will be locked during lunch. The crew raises the access problem before opening another bag.

Supervisor follow-up

Add flushing access to station-relocation checks. Confirm readiness and communicate any changed emergency arrangements before restarting corrosive-material work.

Session and source notes

Suggested session: 3–5 minutes including discussion. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.50(g) — emergency drenching and flushing — https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1926/1926.50. Check the actual product's safety data sheet for exposure and first-aid information.

Show the crew

Walk the normal clear route to the designated unit with eyes open. Identify any gate or obstruction. Do not simulate blindness or discharge the unit unless assigned under its inspection procedure.

Ask the crew

  1. Why does the move trigger another check? The route, access, and proximity to the actual work have changed.
  2. Who resolves whether the facilities are suitable? The employer's responsible supervisor, using the exposure assessment, product information, and applicable requirements; workers should report gaps.
