Key message: Demonstrate a clean glove-and-sleeve arrangement using the site-approved equipment for the nickel task.
Understand the hazard
Focus: Nickel-bearing solutions.
Nickel-bearing baths and residues deserve attention even when the operator does not see a cloud above the tank. Skin contact, splashes, and contaminated surfaces can create exposure. Some workers may develop sensitization. A recurring rash should be reported through the site's health process, rather than accepted as an unavoidable part of plating work.
Use the controls
Use the protection selected for the actual nickel product and task. Keep contaminated gloves away from phones, door handles, and personal items. Handle racks and parts with the approved tools instead of dipping a hand into the solution. Check cuffs and sleeves after splash-prone work, and follow the established cleaning and changing arrangements.
Stop, report, and verify
Report damaged protection or skin symptoms promptly and obtain appropriate evaluation. Do not share creams or rely on a barrier product as a substitute for controls. The supervisor should review the exposure task and whether contamination is spreading beyond the line. A worker who changes jobs within the same department may need different protection and instruction.
Discuss with the team
A worker develops repeated wrist irritation where a glove cuff meets the sleeve.
Question: Why should the cuff arrangement be investigated?
Answer guidance: It may allow solution to enter or remain against the skin and needs a task-specific control review.
Question: What should happen to recurring skin irritation?
Answer guidance: Report it promptly for appropriate health and task-control review.
Prepare, practice, and follow up
Leader preparation: Bring the current instruction for nickel-bearing solutions, the relevant site checklist, and clean demonstration materials. Confirm the assigned lead and local stop-work response before presenting.
Activity: Demonstrate a clean glove-and-sleeve arrangement using the site-approved equipment for the nickel task.
Follow-up: Observe the next applicable task and verify this practice: demonstrate a clean glove-and-sleeve arrangement using the site-approved equipment for the nickel task. Record any gap, responsible person, and completion check before repeating the task.
