Key message: Inspect a designated outdoor storage point and identify one possible route from residue to runoff.
Understand the hazard
Focus: Stormwater prevention.
Rain can contact residues on drums, pallets, scrap, and equipment stored outside a plating shop. Runoff can carry metals and other contaminants even when no obvious spill is present. A closed container does not guarantee a clean exterior or a protected storage area. Outdoor conditions need the controls specified in the facility's applicable stormwater program.
Use the controls
Use the approved storage location, covering, containment, and inspection arrangement. Keep labels visible and separate incompatible materials. Check for damaged packaging, stained ground, blocked drainage, and exposure after deliveries or material movement. Do not place used filters, racks, or chemical-contact equipment outside as temporary storage without an approved plan for residues and weather.
Stop, report, and verify
Report a release or threatened runoff promptly through the environmental response route. Use drain protection only when trained, safe, and assigned; do not walk into contaminated runoff or traffic to improvise a barrier. Record the location and observed condition for the responsible lead. Restore the approved storage control and verify it after the next affected handling activity.
Discuss with the team
Used chemical-contact equipment is set outside overnight with rain forecast.
Question: What needs to be decided before it is left there?
Answer guidance: Whether the location and protection prevent exposure and comply with the approved storage and stormwater arrangements.
Question: Can used chemical-contact equipment be stored outside without review?
Answer guidance: No. Residues, weather exposure, storage, and runoff controls need evaluation.
Prepare, practice, and follow up
Leader preparation: Bring the current instruction for stormwater prevention, the relevant site checklist, and clean demonstration materials. Confirm the assigned lead and local stop-work response before presenting.
Activity: Inspect a designated outdoor storage point and identify one possible route from residue to runoff.
Follow-up: Observe the next applicable task and verify this practice: inspect a designated outdoor storage point and identify one possible route from residue to runoff. Record any gap, responsible person, and completion check before repeating the task.

Awareness briefing: apply site-specific procedures and current applicable requirements. This talk does not replace required training, qualification, exposure assessment, or a written safety program.
Suggested session: 4-6 minutes, including discussion and activity. Prepared October 18, 2026; verify current requirements before use.
