Power Trowels: Do Not Defeat the Operator Control

Concrete Workers · 7 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Prevent contact and uncontrolled movement during finishing.

Know the hazard

Team: Concrete Workers. Topic: Equipment Safety.

A power trowel can move unexpectedly if the operator loses control, and its rotating parts can injure a worker who approaches too closely. The equipment must match the task and be operated by trained personnel. Do not let a smooth-looking slab hide trip points, edge exposure, or interference from hoses and nearby finishing tools. Plan how the operator will move and how other workers will stay clear.

Use the controls

Inspect the machine using the manufacturer's instructions. Required guards and operator controls must function as designed. For manually guided rotating trowels, do not tie, tape, or hold an automatic stop control in the running position. A machine that needs a defeated control to keep working needs to be removed from service and evaluated. Adjustments, cleaning, and blade work follow the approved shutdown and energy-control procedure; waiting for visible rotation to slow is not a servicing plan.

Work within the safe plan

Coordinate starts and stops with nearby workers and keep hands and feet out from under guards. Reassess if slab edges, openings, or access conditions change. Select power equipment appropriate to ventilation conditions; an engine-operated tool introduces an exhaust hazard in enclosed or partly enclosed areas. At closeout, park and secure the trowel as instructed so the next person does not encounter a hot, unstable, or unexpectedly energized machine. Good finishing preserves both the surface and the operator's control.

Discuss with the crew

An operator tapes the handle control because hand fatigue keeps stopping the trowel.

Question: What is required?
Answer guidance: Remove the equipment from use and address the control and work method; never defeat the safety function.

Question: Can blades be cleaned while they coast down?
Answer guidance: No. Use the approved full shutdown and energy-control procedure before access.

Prepare, act, and follow up

Leader preparation: Bring the trowel manual and inspection checklist.

Put it into practice: Inspect the machine with it safely off and identify the operator control and guards.

Supervisor follow-up: Verify training, equipment condition, and task planning before the next finishing operation.
