Present a Safety Resource Request as a Control Decision
Safety Workers · 7 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Give management a clear choice about resources and current exposure.
Know the hazard
Team: Safety Workers. Topic: Safety Leadership.
Safety staff often need resources they cannot authorize. A useful request explains the exposure, current protection, proposed improvement, and decision needed. Begin with the work condition rather than a shopping list. Describe who is exposed, during which task, and what credible event or health effect is being prevented. State what evidence supports the concern and where technical uncertainty remains. Avoid exaggerated predictions or unsupported claims that a purchase guarantees compliance.
Use the controls
Offer practical options with their protective strengths and limitations. Consider removing the task, changing the material or method, installing an engineered control, or providing an interim arrangement while a stronger solution is developed. Include installation, training, maintenance, and verification needs so the request reflects the whole control. Identify what cannot continue safely without additional protection through the applicable site process. A cost comparison should not hide a mandatory requirement or treat a failed critical control as an ordinary budget preference.
Work within the safe plan
Ask for a named decision maker and a decision date. Record the response, assigned resources, and interim conditions. If the request is deferred, review whether current protection remains effective and escalate an unacceptable gap through the designated route. After implementation, verify that the improvement solved the problem and share the result. The aim is a transparent management decision about protection and responsibility, not a dramatic presentation that leaves everyone concerned but nobody authorized to act on the actual field condition.
Discuss with the crew
A lifting aid request has been pending while employees continue an awkward repetitive transfer.
Question: What improves the request?
Answer guidance: Task evidence, feasible options, current protection, implementation needs, and a decision owner.
Question: What must be reviewed during delay?
Answer guidance: Whether interim protection is effective and the task can continue safely.
Prepare, act, and follow up
Leader preparation: Bring one unresolved finding that requires a management decision.
Put it into practice: Write a short resource request with a specific decision and decision date.
Supervisor follow-up: Track the management response and verify the selected control.
