Key message: Confirm host and staffing-agency coordination before temporary workers begin a task.
Know the hazard
Team: Safety Workers. Topic: Contractor Safety.
Temporary workers can be exposed when the job they arrive to perform differs from the assignment described to their staffing agency. Safety staff should compare the actual work with the agreed role before the person starts. Identify equipment, chemicals, access restrictions, supervision, and emergency arrangements. General orientation is useful, but it does not replace the task-specific instruction and protection needed for the host workplace. Clarify responsibilities between the host employer and staffing agency.
Use the controls
Ask the worker to explain the task, who directs it, and where to obtain help. Confirm appropriate training and any required authorization through the applicable program. Do not assume prior experience with similar equipment establishes competence for the installed machine. If a supervisor changes the assignment, trigger another review rather than treating the change as ordinary flexibility. A worker sent to packaging should not quietly become a maintenance helper around uncontrolled equipment because the line is short staffed.
Work within the safe plan
Provide reporting routes that do not depend entirely on the supervisor who controls the assignment. Explain how the host and agency communicate injuries, concerns, and assignment changes while protecting necessary personal information. Include temporary workers in applicable inspections, emergency planning, and feedback. Check the actual work after the first shift and during busy periods. A strong coordination process makes the boundaries of the assignment visible and gives the worker a practical way to question work that exceeds those boundaries.
Discuss with the crew
A temporary packer is asked to clear a jam inside a guarded machine.
Question: What changed?
Answer guidance: The assignment now includes a different hazard and potentially different authorization requirements.
Question: What should happen before proceeding?
Answer guidance: Pause and review the task, energy control, training, and host-agency responsibilities.
Prepare, act, and follow up
Leader preparation: Bring the assignment description and host-agency contacts.
Put it into practice: Compare one temporary assignment description with the work actually being performed.
Supervisor follow-up: Resolve and communicate any scope difference to both employers.
