Pump Outriggers: The Setup Is a Ground-Support Decision
Concrete Workers · 7 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Recognize support and underground-condition concerns before deployment.
Know the hazard
Team: Concrete Workers. Topic: Concrete Pumping.
A pump can arrive at the right location and still be unsafe to deploy there. Outrigger support depends on the machine, configuration, ground, and hidden conditions below. Fill, buried structures, excavation edges, and recent rain may matter even when the surface looks firm. A paving slab should not be assumed to support the equipment simply because delivery vehicles have driven over it.
Use the controls
The responsible personnel must evaluate the site and establish a setup consistent with manufacturer instructions and the project plan. Workers should identify uncertain ground, nearby openings, and conflicts with utilities or access before deployment. Use the specified support arrangement; random scrap does not become suitable cribbing because it is thick. Do not independently relocate or partially deploy an outrigger to fit a crowded area. Changes require the responsible operator and site personnel to reassess.
Work within the safe plan
Keep people clear of moving components during setup and watch for settlement or movement from a protected position. If support changes, stop the operation and notify the operator immediately rather than adding material under loaded equipment by hand. Preserve the support area through the pour so another crew does not excavate, remove mats, or route loads across it. Reliable setup is a coordinated ground-support decision made before concrete delivery, then maintained until the machine is safely removed.
Discuss with the crew
The planned outrigger position is over a covered utility vault that is absent from the setup drawing.
Question: What should happen?
Answer guidance: Stop setup and have responsible personnel evaluate and revise the location or support arrangement.
Question: Can workers add improvised cribbing under a loaded outrigger?
Answer guidance: No. Stop and use the authorized manufacturer-consistent correction process.
Prepare, act, and follow up
Leader preparation: Bring the pump setup plan and ground-condition information.
Put it into practice: Identify underground features and support conflicts on the setup drawing. Assign someone to obtain answers for every unidentified underground feature.
Supervisor follow-up: Document resolution of ground-support uncertainties before deployment.
