Key message: Identify the assigned respirator, its permitted task, and the escalation route for an unknown atmosphere.
Understand the hazard
Focus: Respiratory protection.
A respirator is not a universal answer to tank mist or an unknown chemical release. Different contaminants and concentrations require different decisions. A cartridge that looks suitable may not protect against the actual hazard. If the atmosphere is unknown or an emergency is developing, an unassigned worker should evacuate rather than choose a respirator and investigate.
Use the controls
When respirator use is required, use the assigned equipment within the written program, including medical evaluation, training, and fit testing for tight-fitting types as applicable. Follow the specified filter or cartridge change arrangement. Inspect the unit and perform the required user seal check. Facial hair or other interference at the seal must be resolved before tight-fitting use.
Stop, report, and verify
Stop if the respirator is damaged, fit is uncertain, or the work is outside the approved assignment. Leave the exposure area by the trained method before adjusting or removing it. Tell the supervisor about breathing difficulty, irritation, or unexpected conditions. A successful fit test does not authorize entry into every atmosphere or replace ventilation and other required controls.
Discuss with the team
A worker offers a spare cartridge respirator to investigate a sudden chemical odor.
Question: Why is that an unsafe response?
Answer guidance: The contaminant and atmosphere have not been evaluated, and the worker lacks an authorized response assignment.
Question: Does a fit test authorize emergency entry?
Answer guidance: No. Equipment suitability, atmosphere, training, assignment, and response capability are separate requirements.
Prepare, practice, and follow up
Leader preparation: Bring the current instruction for respiratory protection, the relevant site checklist, and clean demonstration materials. Confirm the assigned lead and local stop-work response before presenting.
Activity: Identify the assigned respirator, its permitted task, and the escalation route for an unknown atmosphere.
Follow-up: Observe the next applicable task and verify this practice: identify the assigned respirator, its permitted task, and the escalation route for an unknown atmosphere. Record any gap, responsible person, and completion check before repeating the task.

Awareness briefing: apply site-specific procedures and current applicable requirements. This talk does not replace required training, qualification, exposure assessment, or a written safety program.
Suggested session: 4-6 minutes, including discussion and activity. Prepared October 18, 2026; verify current requirements before use.
