Rolling Scaffolds: Moving the Platform Is a Separate Task
Builders · 7 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Control rolling-scaffold movement and prevent unplanned travel.
Know the hazard
Team: Builders. Topic: Scaffold Safety.
A rolling scaffold is useful only when its movement is controlled. Small floor joints, debris, slopes, and overhead obstructions can make a short relocation hazardous. Moving a tower with loose tools or people aboard can change its stability and expose anyone nearby to falling objects or tipping.
Use the controls
Follow the manufacturer and applicable scaffold requirements for the configuration, height, bracing, and movement. Lock casters and wheels as required before use and verify the support surface. Do not improvise added height or remove braces to fit through a doorway. Workers must not ride during movement unless every applicable condition specifically allowing it is met; our default movement plan should be to descend and clear the platform before relocation.
Work within the safe plan
Assign a person to inspect the route, overhead clearance, floor loading, and pedestrian boundary before moving. Move from the prescribed location without applying force high on the tower. After relocation, reestablish locks, access, and protection and obtain the required inspection before work resumes. Today compare the planned path with the tower's dimensions. If the scaffold cannot pass safely, dismantle or reconfigure it only through authorized personnel; pushing harder or ducking beneath a doorway is not a movement plan.
Discuss with the crew
The tower reaches a doorway with a light fixture below its top rail.
Question: What should the crew do?
Answer guidance: Stop and arrange an approved clearance or reconfiguration plan.
Question: When should work resume after moving?
Answer guidance: After the required setup checks, locking, and inspection.
Prepare, act, and follow up
Leader preparation: Review the specific rolling-scaffold instructions.
Put it into practice: Inspect the intended route from ground level.
Supervisor follow-up: Document movement responsibility and configuration limits.
