Sharp Parts Need a Handling Plan Before Racking

Plating & Metal Finishing · 5 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Use a clean mock part to demonstrate the approved grip, support, and pinch-point avoidance.

Understand the hazard

Focus: Cuts and manual handling.

Metal parts can have burrs, sharp edges, awkward centers of gravity, and trapped liquid. A cut during racking can combine mechanical injury with chemical exposure. Guessing at a load's weight or grabbing its edge to prevent a drop can put hands in danger. Plan the grip, support, and placement before lifting the part.

Use the controls

Use the fixture, lifting aid, or coordinated handling method assigned to the job. Select protection for the combined chemical and cut hazards through the task assessment; ordinary cut-resistant gloves may not resist the chemical. Keep hands away from pinch zones and use approved tools. Do not carry a wet part against your body or let it drip across a walkway.

Stop, report, and verify

Stop when a new part cannot be held or positioned by the approved method. Ask for the correct fixture rather than adding an unreviewed grip or asking someone to catch it. Report burrs, damaged packaging, and unexpected retained solution. Set the part down safely under the approved method before changing grip or clearing the destination.

Discuss with the team

A large sharp-edged part cannot be seated in its normal fixture without someone holding it near a pinch point.

Question: What should happen before loading continues?
Answer guidance: Stop and have the fixture and handling method reviewed for a safe approved arrangement.

Question: Can ordinary cut-resistant gloves be assumed chemically resistant?
Answer guidance: No. The combined cut and chemical hazards need assessed protection.

Prepare, practice, and follow up

Leader preparation: Bring the current instruction for cuts and manual handling, the relevant site checklist, and clean demonstration materials. Confirm the assigned lead and local stop-work response before presenting.

Activity: Use a clean mock part to demonstrate the approved grip, support, and pinch-point avoidance.

Follow-up: Observe the next applicable task and verify this practice: use a clean mock part to demonstrate the approved grip, support, and pinch-point avoidance. Record any gap, responsible person, and completion check before repeating the task.
