Silica Dust: Plan the Cut Before Making the Dust

General Small Business · 7 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Recognize tasks that may generate respirable crystalline silica and request appropriate controls.

Know the hazard

Team: General Small Business. Topic: Occupational Health.

Cutting, drilling, grinding, or disturbing materials containing crystalline silica can release respirable dust. The particles of concern may be too small to see, and a task that looks briefly dusty can still require controls. Exposure can cause serious lung disease and other health effects.

Use the controls

Before work, the employer must evaluate the task and follow the applicable silica requirements. Suitable controls may include appropriate wet methods or effective dust collection designed for the operation. Equipment setup, maintenance, and use matter; an attached hose does not establish effective capture. Keep unnecessary people out of the exposure area and coordinate with nearby businesses or occupants.

Work within the safe plan

Use the approved housekeeping method. Do not assume dry sweeping or blowing dust away with compressed air is acceptable. Respiratory protection, when required, needs the appropriate program and selection. This awareness talk does not establish that a task meets an exposure limit or qualifies a worker to perform uncontrolled cutting. Today, we will confirm what material is being disturbed, which control method is planned, and who verifies the setup before the tool starts.

Discuss with the crew

A tenant asks a maintenance employee to dry-grind a concrete threshold while the business remains open.

Question: What needs to happen before the work?
Answer guidance: Assess the material and task, determine applicable silica controls, plan occupant protection, and verify trained personnel and equipment.

Question: Is a dust mask by itself an adequate plan?
Answer guidance: No. Exposure control and any required respiratory program must be established.

Prepare, act, and follow up

Leader preparation: Identify planned work involving concrete, masonry, stone, or similar materials.

Put it into practice: Identify one dust-generating task and locate its approved work method before scheduling it.

Supervisor follow-up: Verify control equipment, training, housekeeping, and applicable exposure assessment obligations.
