Splash Goggles and Face Shields Have Different Jobs

Key message: Inspect a clean set of approved splash eye and face protection and demonstrate how the pieces fit together.
Understand the hazard
Focus: Eye and face protection.
Pouring, sampling, and removing racks can send liquid toward the face. A face shield provides coverage, but it does not replace the eye protection required for a chemical splash task. Open spaces around a shield can let liquid reach the eyes. The task assessment determines the combination of protection, including any needed goggles and shield.
Use the controls
Check the equipment for cracks, chemical damage, visibility, and a secure fit before use. Select the approved type for the actual splash hazard rather than using whatever is nearest. Make sure prescription eyewear and other protective equipment fit together without breaking coverage. Keep the shield lowered during the exposure task, not only while walking toward it.
Stop, report, and verify
Replace damaged or contaminated equipment through the designated process. If protection interferes with seeing the task, stop and resolve the fit or visibility problem instead of lifting it while pouring. Know the emergency flushing route before work starts. Good eye protection reduces the chance of injury; it does not make a splash safe or remove the need for prompt first aid.
Discuss with the team
A worker lifts a fogged face shield during a chemical addition while wearing only ordinary spectacles.
Question: What needs to happen before the addition resumes?
Answer guidance: Restore the task-required eye and face protection and resolve the visibility problem.
Question: Is a face shield automatically a replacement for splash goggles?
Answer guidance: No. Use the combination selected for the chemical splash task.
Prepare, practice, and follow up
Leader preparation: Bring the current instruction for eye and face protection, the relevant site checklist, and clean demonstration materials. Confirm the assigned lead and local stop-work response before presenting.
Activity: Inspect a clean set of approved splash eye and face protection and demonstrate how the pieces fit together.
Follow-up: Observe the next applicable task and verify this practice: inspect a clean set of approved splash eye and face protection and demonstrate how the pieces fit together. Record any gap, responsible person, and completion check before repeating the task.
