Stay Out of Suspended Rack Travel

Plating & Metal Finishing · 5 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Walk the rack travel route without a load and identify the operator position and pedestrian exclusion points.

Understand the hazard

Focus: Hoists and suspended loads.

A loaded plating rack can swing, drop, or carry dripping solution through a travel path. A worker below it faces both impact and chemical exposure. Being familiar with the hoist does not make standing under a load acceptable. Establish the travel route and the place where everyone will stand before movement begins.

Use the controls

Use the assigned hoist operator and inspected lifting arrangement. Confirm the load is attached by the approved method and within the rated arrangement. Keep hands away from pinch points and use approved positioning tools when needed. Maintain the exclusion area and communication with anyone involved. Do not move a suspended rack over people or let someone walk beneath it to save time.

Stop, report, and verify

Stop movement if the route becomes occupied, the load is unstable, or signals are unclear. Keep clear while the operator brings the load to a safe condition under the operating procedure. Do not grab a swinging rack by hand or attempt to catch a falling part. Report damaged hooks, lifting points, or controls before the next lift.

Discuss with the team

A coworker walks under a rack to retrieve a tool while the hoist is moving.

Question: What should happen to the lift?
Answer guidance: Stop the movement safely and restore the exclusion area before continuing.

Question: Should a worker catch or grab a swinging load?
Answer guidance: No. Keep clear and let the operator follow the safe handling procedure.

Prepare, practice, and follow up

Leader preparation: Bring the current instruction for hoists and suspended loads, the relevant site checklist, and clean demonstration materials. Confirm the assigned lead and local stop-work response before presenting.

Activity: Walk the rack travel route without a load and identify the operator position and pedestrian exclusion points.

Follow-up: Observe the next applicable task and verify this practice: walk the rack travel route without a load and identify the operator position and pedestrian exclusion points. Record any gap, responsible person, and completion check before repeating the task.
