Key message: Prevent overload and separate people from suspended or elevated materials.
Know the hazard
Team: Builders. Topic: Material Handling.
A telehandler can lift a load close to the machine that it cannot safely place at full reach. Attachment type, boom angle, extension, ground support, and load center all matter. Guessing from yesterday's lift can overload the machine or tip it while workers are waiting at an upper opening.
Use the controls
Only trained, evaluated, and authorized operators should operate the equipment. Confirm the correct load chart for the actual attachment and configuration, verified load weight, travel route, and landing point. Inspect ground support and keep people clear of the load path and crush areas. Do not carry people on forks or an improvised pallet. Any personnel platform use requires the specific compliant equipment, manufacturer limitations, and applicable work controls.
Work within the safe plan
Coordinate the receiving crew so nobody reaches beneath a suspended load or stands between material and the structure. Use approved rigging and attachments; a loose sling around forks is not automatically acceptable. Stop when the weight is unknown, the chart does not cover the setup, or stability changes. Today walk through the next placement on paper and identify the maximum reach, load information, and exclusion zone. The operator needs a plan that remains within capacity throughout the entire movement, not just at pickup.
Discuss with the crew
A bundle is lifted near the machine and then cannot be placed without extending farther.
Question: Does a successful pickup prove safe placement?
Answer guidance: No; capacity must cover the entire configuration and movement.
Question: Who may operate the machine?
Answer guidance: An operator trained, evaluated, and authorized for the equipment and task.
Prepare, act, and follow up
Leader preparation: Bring the machine-specific load chart and attachment identification.
Put it into practice: Review one planned lift against the actual load chart.
Supervisor follow-up: Require a placement plan for difficult upper-level deliveries.
Awareness briefing. Apply current site procedures and applicable requirements. This talk does not replace required qualification, practical training, exposure assessment, medical evaluation, or a written program.
Suggested session: 5-7 minutes, including discussion and activity. Prepared October 18, 2026; recheck current requirements before use.
