The Customer’s Attic Boxes Are Part of the Exposure Decision

Insulation & Weatherization · 5 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Do not move stored belongings through suspected vermiculite insulation to make room for work.

Read aloud

A customer may ask us to shift a few boxes before insulating. That request can become an exposure task if the boxes sit in, or must pass through, suspected vermiculite insulation.

EPA recommends leaving vermiculite insulation undisturbed because it may contain asbestos. Moving boxes, dragging bags, or clearing a path can disturb the material even when removing insulation is not our assignment.

Before moving belongings, review the attic assessment and access plan. If suspected vermiculite is present or the material is uncertain, stop the disturbance and notify the supervisor. Do not sweep it aside, collect a sample casually, or ask the customer to clear it for us.

The responsible person must arrange appropriate assessment and determine what work can proceed. Any asbestos work requires the applicable training, controls, and contractor qualifications. An ordinary dust mask or a customer’s assurance does not resolve the concern. Explain the pause clearly and keep others from disturbing the area while the next step is arranged.

Scenario

Boxes block the planned work area, and granular insulation surrounds their bases. The crew pauses instead of dragging them toward the hatch.

Supervisor follow-up

Include customer belongings in prework assessments and explain access restrictions before scheduling installation.
