Treatment Chemical Deliveries: Verify Before Connecting

Water, Sewer & Treatment · 7 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Prevent incompatible deliveries and wrong-tank transfer.

Know the hazard

Team: Water, Sewer & Treatment. Topic: Chemical Safety.

The delivery truck arriving at the usual time does not prove it carries the usual product. A wrong connection can place incompatible chemicals together or contaminate the treatment process. The critical pause happens before a cap is removed or a hose is connected. The receiving employee must follow the plant's verification process, and the driver must not be left to guess which connection serves which tank.

Use the controls

Compare the shipment information with the approved product, receiving point, tank identity, available capacity, and transfer procedure. Confirm compatibility using plant documentation and the product information. If labels are unreadable, connections are similar, or delivery paperwork conflicts with the order, stop the transfer until the discrepancy is resolved. Neither production pressure nor a driver's assurance replaces verification by the responsible plant personnel. Do not improvise adapters to make an uncertain connection fit.

Work within the safe plan

Keep containment, communication, and emergency access ready for the entire transfer. Know who can stop the operation and how an alarm or leak will be reported. Remain within the monitoring arrangements required by the receiving procedure. After the transfer, secure connections, check for leakage, and document the delivery through the plant process. This talk provides recognition skills; only trained and authorized personnel perform chemical receiving. A few deliberate checks protect workers, treatment performance, and everyone relying on the water system.

Discuss with the crew

A replacement driver points to two unlabeled fill ports and asks which one is for hypochlorite.

Question: What is the correct response?
Answer guidance: Stop and verify the receiving point through the authorized plant process before connecting.

Question: Does a matching hose fitting establish chemical compatibility?
Answer guidance: No. Product and destination must be independently verified.

Prepare, act, and follow up

Leader preparation: Bring a delivery checklist and a tank identification photograph.

Put it into practice: Walk through the checklist using a photograph without connecting any equipment.

Supervisor follow-up: Replace unclear identification and review how access to fill points is controlled.
