Wet Concrete Inside Boots: Stop Before the Burn Develops

Concrete Workers · 7 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Recognize caustic contact during placing and finishing.

Know the hazard

Team: Concrete Workers. Topic: Chemical Safety.

Concrete inside a boot is not just uncomfortable grit. Wet cement can injure skin, and a worker may stay exposed while concentrating on the pour. Kneeling in wet material or trapping it inside clothing extends the contact. Plan the work so skin stays separated from the mixture, and treat contamination as a reason to act immediately rather than waiting for the load to be finished.

Use the controls

Use protective clothing, boots, and gloves selected for the work and wear them to prevent material collecting against the skin. Check condition before the pour. If wet concrete enters clothing or footwear, move to a safe location and follow the product and site decontamination instructions promptly. The crew must have appropriate washing facilities ready before work begins. Do not use harsh chemicals or improvised neutralizers on skin, and do not rely on how much it hurts to judge the exposure.

Work within the safe plan

Report contact and any skin changes so appropriate evaluation can be arranged. A coworker can cover the work while the exposed employee decontaminates; production is not an excuse for continuing exposure. Keep contaminated gloves away from clean clothing and vehicle interiors. At closeout, inspect reusable protection and replace damaged items. The practical test is simple: if material can collect inside protective equipment, the equipment and work method need correction before the next placement.

Discuss with the crew

Concrete spills into a boot and the finisher says they will wash after the truck empties.

Question: Should the worker wait?
Answer guidance: No. Stop exposure and follow prompt decontamination and reporting procedures.

Question: Does little pain establish little injury?
Answer guidance: No. Do not judge caustic exposure solely by immediate discomfort.

Prepare, act, and follow up

Leader preparation: Bring clean examples of task-selected boots, gloves, and the cement SDS.

Put it into practice: Show how the selected clothing arrangement keeps concrete from entering boots using clean equipment.

Supervisor follow-up: Verify washing supplies and review any recent skin-contact incidents.
