Window Cleaning and Openings: Keep the Work Inside the Boundary

Commercial Cleaners · 7 minutes · English · Continental Environmental Training
Key message: Avoid exposure through windows and use approved exterior access specialists.

Know the hazard

Team: Commercial Cleaners. Topic: Fall Prevention.

Interior window cleaning can become a fall exposure when someone opens a window, leans through it, or stands on a deep sill. A screen is not fall protection, and a desk beside the window is not a working platform. We must decide whether each window can be cleaned with our authorized method before beginning.

Use the controls

Use suitable ground-based tools or an approved access system for the location. Keep the body within the protected work area and do not bypass guards or opening restrictors. Where exterior work requires suspension equipment, roof access, anchors, or specialized fall protection, refer it to personnel trained and authorized for that system. This briefing does not qualify anyone to rig exterior window-cleaning equipment.

Work within the safe plan

Control the area below where water, tools, or debris could fall. Coordinate with the client on opening restrictions, fragile glazing, security alarms, and pedestrian routes. Stop for damaged glass, loose frames, unexpected wind, or access that differs from the work order. Report inaccessible panes as a scope issue instead of quietly taking a chance to finish the list. Today mark the windows our crew can reach safely and identify the approval route for the others, so complete service never depends on leaning outside a building.

Discuss with the crew

A worker opens a third-floor window and reaches around the frame.

Question: Does keeping one foot inside control the fall?
Answer guidance: No; remain within approved protection and arrange suitable access.

Question: Is a screen a protective barrier?
Answer guidance: No; it is not a fall-protection system.

Prepare, act, and follow up

Leader preparation: Review the window-cleaning scope and one closed window from a safe position.

Put it into practice: Identify an approved method for one difficult window.

Supervisor follow-up: Document windows requiring specialist access.
